How to Teach Your Dog How to Play Fetch

When you’ve got a waiting tray of dog tricks lying in wait for your puppy to master, fetch is a great start. Teaching your dog to play fetch is a great bonding opportunity for dog and person, as well as a way for both of you to expend some pent-up energy.

Teaching your dog to fetch can open the door to so many fun days outside. Dog fetching can give your dog a fun and healthy way to burn some extra energy.

Here’s how to teach your dog how to play fetch.

Start Your Fetch Training With Chasing

Start your fetch training by teaching your dog to chase after a toy. This is a great way to get your dog motivated and excited about playing fetch. Once your dog is good at chasing after the toy, you can start working on getting them to bring the toy back to you.

Start Near and Improve the Distance Further

Start by standing a few feet away from your dog and throwing the toy a short distance. Once your dog brings the toy back to you, give them lots of praise and a dog treat. With patience and consistency, your dog will learn to bring the toy back to you every time you throw it.

Give Your Dog Some Motivation

The key to teaching your dog how to play fetch is to start with small, easy steps and to give your dog plenty of motivation. One way to start is to hold a treat in your hand and let your dog see and smell it. Then, throw the treat a short distance away and say, “fetch!” As your dog brings the treat back to you, praise him or her enthusiastically.

Retrieving Practices

Once your dog understands the game, you can start using a ball or toy or some leather dog toys found here, instead of a treat. Again, start with small throws and gradually increase the distance. If your dog seems to be losing interest, take a break and try again later.

Make Sure to Reward Your Dog

Once your dog is good at fetching, you can start working on getting them to bring the object back to you. This is where providing a reward will come in handy. If your dog brings the object back to you, make sure to give them lots of praise and a treat. With patience and practice, you will be able to teach your dog how to play fetch.

Have Fun With Your Dog and Play Fetch

If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with your dog, why not try fetch? It’s a great way to bond with your furry friend while getting some exercise. Plus, it’s a lot of fun! So get out there and play fetch with your dog today.
