This includes pet insurance, regular checkups, exercise, and, of course, healthy dog food. But what does healthy dog food even look like?

You could spend tons of money at the store on top-notch dog food brands or make your dog food easily at home. All you need is a few good recipes to get you started.

Read on to discover 7 recipes for cooking healthy dog food at home.

Slow Cooked Chicken and Veggies

Chicken and veggies give balanced nutrients and flavor, making it a meal many know and love. Here is a good starting point for a recipe.

  • Boneless Chicken (2lbs)
  • Apples (1-2)
  • Sliced Carrots (2)
  • Frozen Peas (2 cans)
  • Frozen Green Beans (2)
  • Cubed Sweet Potato (1)
  • Olive Oil (2 tbsp)

Add the ingredients to a slow cooker for about eight hours. Be sure to add the peas about 30 minutes before the eight hours is complete for optimal texture. Once this process is finished, drain the liquid, mash up the food, and separate it into portions.

Dog Chili

I bet you never thought you would feed your furry friend chili. Well, it is actually a great meal for them. Here is how you can do it.

  • Ground Beef (1lb)
  • Carrots (4)
  • Corn (1 can)
  • Tomato Paste (1 can)
  • Butter (2 tbsp)
  • Saltless Beef Broth

From here, it is just like any other chili dish. Cook the beef in a frying pan, add everything but the broth, and cook for about six minutes. Once it is ready, throw the cooked mixture and beef broth into a baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.

The Standard Balanced Meal

Do you want something easy and well-balanced for your pup? The standard balanced meal includes turkey, veggies, and rice to help your canine companion get all the nutrients needed.

  • Brown Rice (1 cup)
  • Ground Turkey (3lbs)
  • Shredded Carrots (2)
  • Chopped Spinach (3 cups)
  • Shredded Zucchini (1)
  • Frozen Peas (½ can)
  • Olive Oil (1 tbsp)

Cook the rice and turkey separately. Once the turkey is about done, stir in the other ingredients. Mix the cooked mixture with the rice and let it cool to room temperature.

Scrambled Salmon and Spinach

You may not be the biggest fan of salmon, but your little one will love this healthy dish.

  • Salmon (½ cup)
  • Eggs (2)
  • Chopped Spinach (½ cup)
  • Olive Oil (1 tbsp)

Preheat the olive oil in a skillet, then add the salmon and spinach. Once the salmon is cooked, stir in the eggs continuously for about two minutes. Then let the dish cool down before serving.

Meatloaf

Meatloaf may be a classic for you or something you never want to eat again. Nonetheless, it is a great choice for your dog! Here is how to do it.

  • Lean Ground Beef (1lb)
  • Rolled Oats (1 ½ cups)
  • Eggs (2)
  • Cottage Cheese (½ cup)
  • Veggie mix (broccoli, peas, carrots) (1 ½ cups)

Set your oven to 350 degrees, mix all the ingredients in a bowl, add to a bread pan, and bake for 40 minutes. Once the meatloaf has finished cooking, cut it into slices and refrigerate for portioned servings.

Homemade Kibble

Maybe your dog doesn’t like these fancy meals and is perfectly satisfied with kibble. Well, there is an easy way to make this from home. Here are the directions.

  • Flour (6 cups)
  • Eggs (3)
  • Veggie Broth (2 ½ cups)
  • Powdered Milk (1 cup)
  • Baking Oil (⅓ cup)

Once the ingredients are ready. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, stir the flour and powdered milk in a bowl, mix broth, eggs, and baking oil in a different bowl, then combine all the ingredients. Next, spread the mixture on a cookie pan and bake for 45 minutes. Once the time is up, break the kibble into bite-sized bits and refrigerate.

Vegan Bowl

Does your dog stick to a vegan diet? Here is an easy recipe to follow that will give your dog a balanced, vegan meal to enjoy. Here is how to do it.

  • Sweet Potato (1)
  • Chopped Kale (6 full stems)
  • Black Beans (15oz can)
  • Brown Rice (2 cups)

Bake sweet potato at 400 degrees for about 60 minutes. Cook rice thoroughly for about 45 minutes. Chop up sweet potatoes and kale, then mix in with the rice. The end result should be about three serving sizes.

If you like to eat healthily, then you are probably no stranger to how it feels. You have much more energy and mental strength to take on the day. Giving homemade meals that are healthy and well-balanced to your dog can help them feel great, live longer, and have all the energy they need to love you as much as they do.
